Problem Statements

Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP) Online Monitoring System

Any industries, which uses fresh water in their processes gives out effluent or wastewater, which contains a lot of polluting contaminants. It affects our environment by contaminating the water bodies, which will adversely affect the health life of all living beings. So effluent treatment plant is implanted in small to cluster of industries to treat the effluents or wastewater, which is been disposed out.

By law, effluent from industries must meet the national effluent discharge quality standards set by the Government of Bangladesh, including the “Quality Standards for Classified Industries”. Consequently any ETP must be designed and operated in such a way that it treats the wastewater to these standards. The regulations state that these quality standards must be ensured from the moment of going into trial production for industrial units. They also state that the Department of Environment can undertake spot checks at any time and the pollution levels must not exceed these Quality standards. Furthermore, the quality standards may be enforced in a more stringent manner if considered necessary in view of the environmental conditions of a particular situation. [Table1 - National Standards - Waste Discharge Quality Standards for Industrial Units and Projects (quality standard at discharge point)]

Proper Management, appropriate Use and Cost Minimization for industries can only be achieved by an automatic system - which can monitor effluent at discharged point in real-time, display effluent parametric data on-line, analyze the data, keep history of records and generate alarm/notification based on dynamic input from users.

The Challenge

An Online & Real-time Effluent Discharged Monitoring System for Effluent Treatment Plant (ETP), which consist of online platform for monitoring, tracking and alarming.

River Water Quality Monitoring Using Sensors

Water quality testing is an important part of environmental monitoring. When water quality is poor, it affects not only aquatic life but the surrounding ecosystem as well.

The parameters that affect the quality of water in the environment can be physical, chemical or biological factors. Physical properties of water quality include temperature and turbidity. Chemical characteristics involve parameters such as pH and dissolved oxygen. Biological indicators of water quality include algae and phytoplankton. These parameters are relevant to surface water studies of the ocean, lakes, rivers, groundwater and industries. All these parameters have significant economic impact. Degradation in these parameters will drastically affect our economy and life quality.

Water quality monitoring can help researchers determine human impacts on an ecosystem. These measurements will assist in environmental restoration and remediation. It will help in maintaining environmental standards. DoE wish to automatically collect the parametric data remotely for continuous monitoring of river water.
DoE want to collect the following parametric data (given with unit) from the system:
  • pH Level
  • DO (mg/l)
  • BOD (mg/l)
  • COD (mg/l)
  • TDS (mg/l)
  • Chloride (mg/l)
  • Turbidity (NTU)
  • Alkalinity (mg/l)
  • Electrical Conductivity (EC) (µmhos/cm)
  • Suspended Solid (SS) (mg/l)
